What is Mental Health?

There is a clear connection between mental health and academic performance.
Helping students make the most of their education is everyone’s goal. Students struggling with depression or other mental illnesses have a harder time feeling motivated, learning, concentrating, taking tests, etc.

What is Mental Health and why is it important?

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social wellbeing. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

Over the course of your life, if you experience mental health problems, your mood, thinking, and behavior could be affected. Many factors contribute to mental health:

  • Biological factors, such as genes, brain chemistry or hormones

  • Life experiences, such as trauma or abuse

  • Family history of mental health problems
